Description
Yala National Park
Yala National Park is the most popular destination for wildlife safaris in Sri Lanka. Known especially for leopards and sloth bears, it spans over 98,000 hectares. The park is home to 32 recorded species of mammals. Threatened species such as the sloth bear (Melursus ursinus), leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya), elephant (Elephas maximus), water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), wild boar (Sus scrofa), spotted deer (Axis axis ceylonessis), sambar (Cervus unicolor), and golden jackal (Canis aureus) can be seen here.
Udawalawe National Park
Udawalawe National Park lies on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces and is the sixth-largest wildlife sanctuary in Sri Lanka, located about 180 km from Colombo. It is possibly the best place in the country to observe elephants throughout the year, often seen in large herds bathing, feeding, or moving together through the grasslands.
