Description
Explore the nearly 400-year-old Galle Fort and the many heritage sites that stood firm even in the midst of violent calamities, including the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004. Journey through time as you walk along its streets. Visit the historic ramparts or walls that make up the UNESCO World Heritage Site and take in its cultural and architectural views.
Koggala Sea Turtle Farm
Koggala sea turtle farm & hatchery is located in Galle District. The sea turtles are one of the rare species found in the world. Their heritage could be traced to more than 100 million years. They are supposed to have lived during the Dinosaurs age. But at present about 8 varieties of turtles are said to be existing.
Koggala Lake
Koggala Lake is an unspoiled lake located a few kilometers away from Galle. Koggala Lake is one of the largest natural lakes and one of the major attractions in the area. Koggala is very important because the famous author Martin Wickramasinghe was born here. He described the beauty of Koggala in his novel Madol Duwa.
Handunugoda Tea Factory
Handunugoda Tea Factory is located in the Galle District. The estate is 200 acres in extent and comprises 75 acres of tea. The remaining plantation includes rubber, cinnamon, and coconut. The factory is a living and working museum with well-preserved machinery, most of which were made in the UK over 140 years ago.
Stick Fishing
Stick Fishing is one of the most interesting traditional fishing methods of Sri Lanka. This activity will allow you to fish like a local. Though stilt fishermen make it seem easy and comfortable, the most important skill is balance.
