Yala National Park covers more than 97,000 hectares in the southeastern corner of Sri Lanka. Block 1 — the section open to tourist safari vehicles — is home to a concentration of Sri Lankan leopards that makes it one of the best places in the world to see this animal in the wild. For visitors based in Galle, Yala is a very practical day trip.

Distance from Galle to Yala National Park

Yala's main entrance at Palatupana Gate is approximately 100 km from Galle. The drive takes around 2 to 2.5 hours by car, mostly along the coastal road east through Matara, Tangalle, and Hambantota. The road is good quality and the coastal scenery is pleasant.

Best Time to Visit Yala from Galle

Yala has two main seasons that affect wildlife visibility:

  • Dry season (June to October): water levels in the park drop, animals concentrate near remaining water sources, and vegetation is thinner — much easier to spot wildlife including leopards and elephants.
  • Wet/Green season (November to May): the park is lush and green, which is beautiful, but animals disperse more widely and sightings can be less reliable. The park is usually closed in September for a maintenance period.
  • Best overall months for leopard sightings: July and August

Yala Block 1 is sometimes temporarily closed for maintenance or during the off-season. Always confirm the park is open before booking your transfer.

Wildlife You Might See in Yala Block 1

  • Sri Lankan leopard — the main draw; seen regularly in Block 1
  • Sri Lankan elephant — large herds often spotted near the park's water bodies
  • Sloth bear — most active at dawn and dusk; less frequently seen but present
  • Mugger crocodile — common along the park's lagoons and rivers
  • Water buffalo — large herds in open grasslands
  • Sri Lankan sambar deer, spotted deer, wild boar
  • Birds: painted stork, peacock, black-necked stork, flamingo (seasonal), eagle species

How the Safari Works

Private jeeps enter Block 1 with a licensed tracker/guide. Safari sessions run in two shifts:

  • Morning safari: gates open at 6am, runs until approximately 10:30am (best light and animal activity)
  • Afternoon safari: gates open around 2:30pm, runs until 6:30pm at sunset
  • Morning sessions are generally preferred for leopard activity
  • Entry fees are paid at the gate: national park entry + jeep hire + tracker
  • Jeep hire is arranged separately from your taxi transfer — either pre-booked or arranged at the gate

Book your jeep safari in advance during dry season (June–October). The park gets busy and jeeps fill up, especially on weekends.
